Every bottle has a story to tell. Longevity of fine wine meets immutable blockchain technology

We are the Truth behind the Product

Attachment of vinID NFC tags

Seamless integration. We offer two types of tags: over-the-top tags and integrated stick-on labels. The tags can be attached during the bottling process or just before shipping.

Over-the-top tags can either be attached manually for rare and limited editions or with a specialized labeling machine for mass integration. The design and shape is fully customizable.

The process for the application of stick-on labels remains unchanged. There is the possibility to continue working with the current supplier. Alternatively, we have a Swiss labeling partner, who offers stick-on labels with integrated NFC tags.

Scanning Experience: Authentication and Registration

After equipping products with vinID NFC tags, bottles get delivered to the actual customer.

Customers easily communicate with a bottle by scanning the vinID tag with their smartphone. They can check its authenticity and access additional information. In a next step they can register the bottle in their digital wine cellar, thereby updating the bottle’s digital passport on the blockchain.

Digital Wine Cellar

By registering their bottles, customers are starting to build their own digital wine cellar – at the same time maximizing provenance (updating digital passport). The digital wine cellar contains all digital twins and opens exciting new opportunities.

Not only are customers able to access expert knowledge regarding the respective wine, it is also possible to attach an immutable record of storing conditions to each bottle. For the first time, customers will have an automatic tasting journal as bottles are marked as opened / drunk.

Ongoing Engagement

As fine wine matures, vintners can provide their customers with exclusive digital content to create ongoing touchpoints. Upselling strategies can be used highly targeted thanks to individual call-to-actions that increase re-participation rates.

All attached content is dynamic and can be changed. This allows different marketing campaigns during the product life cycle. Examples include invitations to specific events, special offers or educational activities. It is even possible to receive tailored push notifications based on different wine models (e.g. degustation notes from a special vertical tasting). Our system is also made to run subscription sales starting at harvest and updating customers about their object of desire.

Drinking Experience

Finally, the high point of each bottle of wine has arrived. It is time to enjoy the wine on a suitable occasion together with family, friends or business partners.

Further digital content can be called upon – drinking and decanting recommendations, food-pairing suggestions or details about the respective vintage. No desktop or online research is needed. Customers have all the necessary information by simply tapping the bottle with their smartphone.

In addition, the bottle can be marked as drunk after consumption, which moves the bottle to the digital archive. Wines that are equipped with the “over-the-top tag” automatically go into the archive once the bottle has been opened (“seal opened”). This also creates new touchpoints for vintners to re-engage with their customers.

FAQ

In this section, you will find answers to frequently asked questions about our technology. Didn’t find the answer you were looking for in the FAQ?

vinID NFC tags:

Do you offer different types of tags?

Yes, we offer two types of tags. Over-the-top tags as well as integrated stick-on labels. Integrated stick-on labels have exactly the same functionalities apart from the automatic opening detection.

How & when are the tags applied?

Tags can be attached during the bottling process or just before shipping.

Over-the-top tags can be either attached manually for rare and limited editions or with a specialized labeling machine for mass integration. The process for the application of stick-on labels remains unchanged. There is the possibility to continue working with the current supplier. Alternatively, we have a Swiss labeling partner, who offers stick-on labels with integrated NFC tags.

Can vinID tags be used on different bottles and with different closures?

Customer experience:

What is the digital wine cellar?

The digital wine cellar is an application. It includes the customer’s digital wine collection (digital twins) and is the connection between vintner and customer. It also contains the customers tasting journal as consumed bottles are moved to the archive.

What happens if customers scan the bottle without having the application installed?

The customer already sees a preview. They can check the authenticity, the description as well as the digital passport. In a next step the customer can download the digital wine cellar and secure the bottle in his digital wine cellar.

Is it possible to record storing conditions?

Yes, it is possible to attach immutable events to each bottle of wine and its digital twin, i.e. updating its digital passport. However, as the tag is passive and does not have its own electricity source the information has to be collected with other tools. There are different possibilities, for example data collection via air conditioning or the use of IoT devices at the storing location.

Can vintners use their corporate identity in the digital wine cellar?

Yes, vintners can use their corporate colours for their products.. There is also the possibility for white-label solutions for a specific vintner or a group of vintners.

Technicals:

How does the digital passport for each bottle work?

The unique identity (UID) of each wine bottle is assigned to its respective owner, transformed into a token and stored on blockchain. Each transfer creates a new entry on the ledger and thus a unique transaction history for each bottle of wine. This identity is dynamically encrypted which makes duplication impossible.

What is blockchain and how does it work?

A blockchain is a data structure that is designed to maintain a digital ledger of transactions. The software that manages a blockchain works by distributing copies of this ledger to every computer running the software, creating a decentralized network of machines that all hold the same exact transaction history. When an entry is added to the ledger on one machine, every other machine participating in the network must update their ledger to match the changes. It can be thought of, more familiarly, as an extra secure database with the added benefits of transparency and decentralization. Blockchain technology ensures that the ecosystem is as secure as technically possible.

What does NFC stand for and how does it work?

NFC stands for Near Field Communication. It is a technology that enables a wireless connection between battery-free, passive tags with a reading device such as a smartphone. NFC technology is already being used intensively in areas such as payment transactions, e.g. NFC tags enable contactless payments with credit and debit cards.
